Stepping in and out of the TVB fandom

I mean no negativity when writing this post

Really its been almost a year since I actively participated in the TVB fandom. I haven't posted much since. I got caught up in other fandoms, life got really busy... and I just didn't feel like it. Strange.

So I come back, now. And much has changed. You have new forums popping up, older ones dying, renewal of dying ones. Its like a new atmosphere. (Also I wasn't aware that a new policy was implemented at AF, hence demoted to newbie :P) Anyways, I find myself a little lost in this world. The main blogs are up, some died off... similar to mine. But it seems like a hundred popped up in it's place. All trying to promote themselves though the network of blogs. Affiliate yourself with established sites to launch you blog. Hey I did it and prob the only thing that had gotten this site a steady flow of hits while it was wasting away.

I'm glad that Asia, Sid, Metal, Sehseh's sites are still alive and kicking. Em and her return to translating, along with Jayne (even though she had a setback, best of wishes to her) have kept me somewhat up to date on pressing TVB news during my hiatus.

TVB the unorginal- DOL subtheme

We all know TVB "borrows" many of their ideas from others. While no idea is ever completely original in the entertainment world, TVB is pretty blatant in "borrowing".

Anyways recently I came across Raymond's Drive of Life subtheme MV. Bernice Liu also stars in the video.

Pretty much as soon as I watched it I recognized the basic plot of it. MV is pretty much a condensed version of Korean
film Il Mare/America remake The Lake House. While I did not see Il Mare, I do know there is a *spoiler warning* highlight to read ["accident", where one of them is hit by a bus ].

This is where I was absolutely convinced it was a rip off. Because the whole corresponding though magical diary? Not so new, therefore forgivable, but the fact [ one of them died ] the same exact way? Eh... that's pushing it.

When Fandom collide

I hope that everyone knows by now that Bones, a American show on FOX, is by far my favorite show on TV right now. Now I keep US shows apart from TVB series, because comparing them is just unfair, one trounces the other in terms of quality. This isn't exactly the issue. My favorite TVB series of last year is Forensic Heroes.

Bones' latest episode features Dr. Brennan, who has a new mystery novel that had just come out and immediately becomes a bestseller(again). Brennan along with her partner Agent Seeley Booth, get a cases were a body is tied to an anchor, wrapped around red tape, and fed to the opportunistic Crabs. Why is this important? Because that is exactly how Brennan wrote it in her latest novel 'Red Tape, White Bones'. Though she denies that it has a connection with her book, it obviously does. One huge problem, there are two other murders in the book.

This might seem very familiar to those who saw Forensic Heroes.

Similarities:

Brennan and Sam both write mystery novels including specific ways that the person is disposed of.
Their murders are acted out, in exactly the same way that it is in the Book.

(spoilers for both from now on)

The killer(s) were huge fans of the author and were members at the chat room on her book discussion site.
Obsessed fans were huge part of the episode (oh me Oliver was back, oh how I missed your creepy ways)
Both Brennan and Sam feel guilty about these killings, and are on the cases to find out who is doing this. They both are emotional during this time.

Differences:
There was actually a twist at the end of 'Bones' instead of a typical serial killer, copy cat, there was three separate killers who took part in this scheme. Killing each other's target, so that even though they were the primary suspect, they had airtight alibis. They had met on Brennnan's book discussion chatroom.

I had found Forensic Heroes' plot way too cliché, it was the typical obessive fan. While Bones had that too Oliver, who previously appeared in the pilot of the show, he was eliminated as a suspect when Brennan backhand him, breaking his nose for trying to get too close to her. Yeah he faints at the sight of blood, go figure. I was so realized that he wasn't the killer. This is where I realized that it was three separate killers, which later was revealed to be the three main suspects in each of the killings.

The killings themselves where so interesting. Forensics Heroes, Sam had pretty distinct killings in his novels (I don't remember most of them unfortunately). So did Brennan, where each were each were killed, them fed to various animals (crabs, rats, and fire ants). The last killing was someone that they knew.

In Bones they had talked more about the Book, where one of the squints (lab geeks under Brennan) Hodgins, a conspiracy freak, talks about the symbolism in her books. All the victims were corrupt bureaucrats (red tape that bound them) who have been eating away at the people, so in return are eaten away by animals. Basically gross killings with a splash of social commentary). Plus there is alot of relationship stuff in their too, and Brennan's colorful sexual imagination. Which was just briefly mentioned.

While Forensics Heroes had many episodes to unfold the mystery. Bones had only one single episode. I had figured out FH's mystery rather quickly, I had pegged her as odd in the beginning. When the killing started, I knew it was her. Bones I was so unsure of myself. I'm usually great at solving these cases, because I used to watch tons of this stuff (I've dropped CSI for years though). They threw a curveball. On Bones the cases aren't its strong point and aren't a huge part of the show. Its about the chemistry between the leads, and the whole cast. I really liked this case, plus going back to Brennan being author Brennan is kinda awesome and Brennan-ites.

I like how Bones features the science better, and also the Squints (the people in the lab) as a huge part of the show. And is allowed to feature humor, in the most gloomy of situations. Hodgins cracks a joke about a rat who ate a bullet. When Angela ask why can't they let nature take its course. He replies 'Do you have any idea how tight a rat's rectum is?', Angela: 'Please don't tell me you do'. Oh the flirting over disgusting things.

Conclusion: While the plots and many elements are very similar. It was purely coincidence that they are so similar, but they end up very different.

TVB and CCTV's new production, the 60 episodes "The Legendary Era", is trying to air by July of this year to celebrate the 10th year of reunion, so the filming has continued without stopping. However, it was said that Raymond Lam, who is being promoted, was always late. One of the crew workers said that the day before he was so late that Jessica Hsuan left angrily after waiting for a long time. This made the executives had a talk with Raymond and made sure the filming can continue smoothly.

TVB's new series, "The Legendary Era", has Charmaine Sheh, Myolie Wu, Jessica Hsuan, Raymond Lam, Ron Ng, and Joe Ma, etc as its cast. Raymond who is main in the series was rumored that he was always late, and the co-worker revealed that he was late the day before, causing Jessica, who was always on time, refuse to film.

When Raymond was asked about this, he first claimed that he hasn't been late for a while, but explained afterwards, "This is a grand production of 60 episodes, and it requires half a year to film. Every actor has the chance of being late, but this is a serious production, and we're working with so many elders, who would want to be late? Maybe our timing didn't quite match, and as an actor, we try our best, however, there still might be small mistakes."

Raymond also denied that he got scolded by the executives, and when he was asked if he had any problems with Jessica Hsuan, Raymond answered, "We are fine. We used to have the same manager, and we are like brothers and sisters. Jessica treats me really well. "

When Jessica was asked if she left and refused to film because of Raymond, she replied shockly, "What? I don't want to mention about this; I don't want to cause trouble. (Was Raymond late?) There's always problems during filming, I don't want to say a lot. (Will you feel awkward filming with Raymond?) No, we are fine, we don't have problems working together." The producer Poon Ka Duk didn't reply before the article was released.

From responses I feel like there is truth to it added in Raymond's reputation for being late often and Jess's nature to be punctual. I doubt that she would hold something against him for long, but I wasn't there, I don't know Jess, *shrugs*

Dicey Business Review: Part one

Background:
Kiu Jing Chor (Michael Miu) is a successful CEO of a casino called Onisac, who has worked very hard to earn his fame and money that he has now. His life is the opposite of his adversary Chai Foon Cheung (Bobby Au-Yueng). Ah Chueng has nothing, running away from his past (losing his brother) he ends up in the Philippines were he coincidentally runs into Chou Fok Ying (Benz Hui). With the help Ah Chor and Ah Ying, he is able to get his life back together. And the three become the best of friends.

With the introduction of Lee Ching Wan (Jessica Hsuan), an addicted gambler, she complicates everyone’s lives in many ways. Ah Chueng find his long lost brother who coincidentally is Ah Wan’s tenant back in Hong Kong.

When things start to turn against Ah Chor, he starts going down a dark path. A path that he himself is not able to turn back. He loses everything, his love (Ah Wan), his friends (Ah Chueng and Ah Ying), money, fame. While Ah Chueng gains everything that he used to have, including Ah Wan.

He gambles his life away trying to gain back what he loses, only to further go down the wrong path. In the world of gambling, there is always someone that loses.

Overall Cast:
I’m not going to individual critique of the main cast because I felt that everyone did a standup job. Impressive for the standards of today. Where each series contains that weak link, and filled with inexperienced cast.

The trio Bobby Au-Yueng, Michael Miu, Benz Hui, truly stole the show with their talent and experience. Who said men can’t cry? These three prove that they can. I forgot I was watching a series… I truly felt all the emotions all the characters were feeling.

What I loved:
Benz Hui- He stole the show at the end. Plain and simple. His character was so sweet, and so unselfish. He was a simple guy, a friend that every one would like to have. He was a mediator between his friends, taking both sides. No matter what anyone said, he would stand up for them even when things looked grim. His simple solution to all the problems in the world? Hot Pot.

Bobby and Jessica’s friendship- I’m just saying friendship here. I am personally not a fan of their romantic relationship, but as friends. They rocked! They were just so fun to watch on screen, whether they were fighting or I would like to call it bickering. I love bickering couples! All my favorite couples bicker. There was just such an intense friend chemistry that no one can deny. BFFs!

Bosco and Tavia: One word: Cute!! They are so sweet together.

Michael and Jessica's "Love": Besides how they got together *rolls eyes at the originality of it* I couldn’t help but to like these two together. Was it true love? I would like to believe it was. I never thought that I would see the chemistry between these two. I was pleasantly surprised.

The trio Bobby Au-Yueng, Michael Miu, Benz Hui. Hot pot!!! Ying’s Honey and Baby.

Not so much…

Tavia Yeung- That wisps in her speech irked me to no end… how is her character perfect without it (referring to Tavia adding the wisp to make her character not so perfect) She was ditzy but she had a good heart. Besides the wisps, I liked her character.

Bosco Wong- He was so cute when he started working at the Casino. All the way up to when he left the casino I really liked his character. Then he became so naïve. It kills me that he chose that path. Okay and one more thing, I do not believe he was the best actor in the series… just look at the show from an objective standpoint, I know there is a lot of Bosco fans around but his acting was grossly overshadowed by more talented and more experienced actors. He still needs a few more years. Plus he’s change in character was a bit awkward.

I know that Jessica has a huge fan base in China due to her exposure there due to her famous series, pairings, fuctions, etc. I think Jess is very lucky to have so many series that really boost your popularity. Also an added plus that she has filmed a few series outside TVB. Will Drive For Life, make her popularity explode once again? well we will have to wait and see.

I have to admit I don't know why TVB chose her to do this series. I see this as a huge promotion series, mainly to make money and to expose TVB artist to the China Market. Jess already has that China fanbase, is TVB trying to tap into that to ensure its success? Now that Jessica is no long managed with TVB, is there any true gain for TVB if Jessica becomes Highly Successful. Or is it that these Grand Productions needs people that are very experienced and Jess is a representation of that generation that seems to have disappeared? Or is Jessica's loyalty to TVB for so many years being paid back with this popularity boosting series? Big questions about the world of TVB politics... (sorry this whole paragraph was just a mindless rant)

On a different note, Jessica's lock is fresh. The short hair reminds me of her early days. Sigh I still miss her long hair.

Golden Faith part 2: Dicey Business?

I have to admit I never thought I would be so engulfed in this series. I was planning to watch it when it all comes out and when I have more time (which would be in June) but I had a little time this busy vacation and I said why not?

First few episodes doesn’t really grab you, its basically Bobby’s character with nothing and raising up from the ashes and having a steady job and stop gambling. Things get interesting, when he returns to HK and really pick up when Love is thrown into the show. Though it has its draggy part, I haven't noticed though... MAJOR SPOILERS ahead

Golden Faith part 2: Dicey Business?

I can’t help but to think of the similarities that these two series share. Golden Faith has to be one of my favorites series of all-time, because of the amazing chemistry exhibited by Gallen and Jess and the hurdles they had to jump to finally be together.

So how are the two series similar?

One Girl, Two Guys. One Decision.

Ching Wan was friends with (Fai Lo) Ah Cheung. She met CEO (as she call him before) Ah Chor, and always admired him. She got involved with both Ah Chung and Ah Chor, who are sworn-Brothers.

Ching Wan was help by both guys though rough and difficult times. Ah Chor help get past her parents death that she had kept tucked away all these years. She was help by both to quit gambling. And Ah Chueng as always had been there for her, in a very open mutal relationship, as she had done the same for him

Ah Chor broke it off because he was being blackmail and it would put her in greater danger if he was involved with him, he let her go despite loving her. From friendship with Ah Chor grew into a relationship. But when Ah Chor lost everything, Ah Wan was there. And he came back for her when she was in the middle of a relationship with Ah Cheung. Now Ah Wan is faced with a difficult decision of which path to take The Safer Path (one with stability and openness) or Love with everything that comes with it…including several broken hearts.

Now doesn’t that seem familiar to Golden Faith?

Jess again this time as Rachel stuck in the middle of two guys one who is safe and stable, the other is who she truly loves but has broken her heart numerous times. Ivan and Ah Hong are brothers fighting for the same girl…in which Jess here chooses Ivan.

Sigh I really do think it’s the Curse of the Long Series for Jess…

Anyways my prediction is that she chooses Ah Chor but in the end, ends up with neither.

Bobby and Jess’s chemistry is wonderful… as Best Friends. Which I love seeing them together but I don’t see any romantic love between the two. I say better off as friends.

Michael’s character is not cut and dry bad guy or good guy, he very complex. He is not perfect, he has made so many mistakes. I have to admit I never though Jess and Michael would have such chemistry. I really do believe that Michael’s character really loves Jess. But then there is always trouble in paradise for these two. I think they been together for less then a few days as a couple (in which they slept together for sure on more than 3 occasion, shocker there). This next thing is mind blowing, I don’t remember the last time Jess’s character actually cheated, okay I don’t mean emotionally cheated, Cold Blooded Warm Heart which was over 10 years ago! Poor Bobby…

Revised TV schedule

At the start of each TV season, there are so many new freshman shows around. You take a chance with some of them. The ones that have caught your eye in some way or another. Also there are your returning shows that you have been with the previous year. It seems like a lot to watch in your hectic life. So you drop some you gain some and in the end you have a schedule that will change once again when you enter the mid season. When the networks likes to play around and change timeslots. I have to say for those TV freaks out there (I do mean it in the nicest way possible) thank god for TIVO. I for one don’t have the time or inclination to watch over more than one show a night, okay maybe a possible two if its good tv. So here I am during the time where reruns rome free and there is nothing to actually watch, reflecting on what I been watching.

Mondays- I actually watched nothing on Mondays. Until Ying talked about Heroes on her blog. I was always intrigued with the show, and see how it has become a hit with the viewers. I said to myself what could go wrong? So Winter Break here, I had nothing better to do… with my thumb hurting like hell. I started watching it online (I am really loving the ability to watch TV online) After first episode, I admit I was hooked. I love the show now. Its not original that’s for sure, very comic book like. Which it’s suppose to. And Hiro, “Save the cheerleader, Save the world”, he is hilarious and cute. Yeah I loved it so much I watched all 11 episodes in one day…yes I was exhausted after all that. So from now on Heroes on Monday.

Tuesdays- I started out with Gilmore Girls, its last season and I been an avid fan of it since the beginning. Thing were good, I was not a Christopher hater ever… so it was okay. I watched Veronica Mars after it because… well it was after GG. No other reason really. It’s an okay show, enjoyable, but I really don’t see the hype that I have seen. I started to fall really behind in recordings and now I completely dropped both series. I do have the intention on watching it someday though…

Wednesdays- Nothing changed nothing gained. I still have Bones on top priority above everything including homework. Season 2 is very different, and I have so many changes I hate and some of the missing elements of the show but the quality of the show increased. Too bad it’s starting to become more of the (streamline CSI procedural) with the cases due to the new boss whom I dislike a lot. Anyways… still very good TV. Rewatching all of season one, thanks to Sid (I heart you)!

Thursdays- Grey’s Anatomy still. Quality of the show dropped a little from last year but overall it’s been good. One of the shows that is always enjoyable to me no matter what happens.

Fridays - uh there is TV on this day?

Saturday- I think I’m better off playing Wii then watching anything on this day.

Sunday –nothing unless watching some TVB or something.

Currently watching TVB

Dicey Business…. I hate that name I’ll just call it Dou Chueng Fung Wan. Crazy Jess is rather awesome, I was scared it would be a character I wouldn’t like, but seriously she is fun and enjoyable to watch. Really reminds me of Witness to Persecution, her homeless petty thief character. At least I’m starting to watch TVB again… the last series I watched was Forensic Heroes which was months ago.

Jewel in Palace- Okay I admit I never saw the appeal of the show when it first aired. I started watching it and liked it but stopped watching it for some reason…. Account issues or something. Well I didn’t think much about it and suddenly I started watching it again and I’m kinda hooked. I actually don’t mind that its like 70 episodes long, very predictable, with many sub plots… anyways I’m glad I’m watching it now .

Happy Turkey umm I mean… Thanksgiving, Day!

Wee… so lets list the things I’m thankful of! I actually remember last year, today, this blog just had started, and I wrote a thanksgiving post. Seems so far away.

The 5 Things: What toomanysidesofme is thankful for (ent related)

1. TVB – toomany may now be close to really disliking TVB but it has let her discover new minions to control, I mean new friends online. (echoes muhahaha)

2. TV blogs – Whether its TVB related or not, blogs are the way to be! So much information can be shared, including personal thoughts. Toomany says she likes blog because they allow her to brainwash her followers.

3. Internet- The all holy medium, only thing that toomany will blow down to.

4. Toomany gave the following a shot this year (turkey day to turkey day)
Forensic Heroes/Beneath the Charm (or whatever the title was)- I honestly like Yoyo now, hey throw all the tomatoes at toomany but she is really not as annoying as her HH2 days.
Bones- toomany’s favorite show on TV currently. If she would spread the love she would cover all over the world. She highly recommends it! Very happy that she was bored on day in the summer and watched the series and was hooked at second episode she watched. And so happy she did.

5. Bigger TV screen for all toomany’s entertainment she watches! Weee, Oh yeah and playing that new Wii that Rita’s brother bought on it is nice too, fun.

What RIta is thankful for is simple, Friends and Family. Life’s been good. =)

TVB Anniversary, wow a year has passed by, Unbelievable. Anyways you want to know the plain truth? I don't care about TVB anniversary anymore. Not one bit excited. I know its hard to believe. how one year can change it all.

I like to say it one more time, I don't care. Okay that feel better to get that off my chest. umm I think thats all for now... tired and just tired. Three day weekend so happy as can be right now

Chinese in American Televison

Sometimes when in American television, it incorperates Chinese in some way shape or form.
Here are some examples I have personally seen and there is prob a whole lot more out there but I unforunately don't have to time to see every single show.

Grey's Anatomy "The First Cut Is the Deepest" s1e2

In season one, episode 2 named " The First Cut Is the Deepest" There is a women, who speaks no english, well barely any. She is in the hospital seeking assistance, she is not seriously injured but Izzie tends to her. The women Qing Lu speaks Cantonese thoughout the episode (awesome I understood everything as the episode did not provide subtitles) , and Izzie has no idea what she wants. I remember Issie trying to find someone to translate for her, and she does find Christina, but I forget if she even is chinese or speaks it... idk. Eventually Qing Lu leads Izzie outside where she finds a girl Ahn (I say 14-17?) and she has a deep cut across her forehead. The girl fortuntely speaks english (more like broken english but you can understand it). She says that she is an illegal immigrant and that is the reason she can't go inside to get treated and her aunt can because she holds a green card. Izzie risk her career by helping them, she tends to the cut and gives her stiches telling her to come back in three days to take them out.

Two things I remember about this episode, they spoke cantonese in this episode! and Meredith carrying around that ice box the whole episode... lol. Overall I liked this episode and was a great second episode.

Chopsticks with Chinese Characters

This showed up in a recent episode of Bones. As they try to figure out the whos (victim and murder/s) and the other 4 Ws plus the one H, they come across this piece of evidence found in the "lye" (basically a Corrosive which...lol which is base if I'm not wrong) , chopsticks that have Chinese markings on them.

Angela (artist and computer whiz/expert): What you thought to be teeth marking are actually chinese marking engraved along the side
Hodgins: What do they say?
Angela: They say, what makes foolish man think I speak Chinese
Hodgins: I thought you are half chinese
Angela: I think your half swedish, lets me hear some swedish
Cam: [cam butts in] What is it Angela, please
Angela: Its a chopstick, onlt its not the kind you eat with
Hodgins: Like there is another kind?
Angela: Well you wouldn't comb your hair with a fork, would you?
Hodgins: My hair?
Angela: Look the one character I was able to translate off the internet, is the word beauty, then I realize that its meant for hair
Cam: Where you twist it in a bun and stick it in to hold it in place
Angela nods
Cam: If this is what it is then we can be pretty sure that it wasn't Larry's (the victim)

Personally I don't get why they figured out the harder character, just looking at it you can see which one is indeed harder. But "mei" has a bigger significance of course. I which she just translated the whole thing. And the half chinese/speak/half swedish thing was hilarious. Damn Cam for ruining the moment, well more like inturrupting. This episode made me a little queasy... something I have never happen watching TV, nope not even that CSI with the guy in the tub this guy in tube beats the CSI one. Okay episode.

X-Files "Hell Money" s3e19

Freaky freaky case, Kim Hsin is very sick. Mulder and Scully uncover a black market for body parts. And Kim Hsin is in need for one (one of the internal organs... I forgot which one, maybe a liver?) Well it happens that her dad is involved in this black market, reason? He is gambling his own body parts to try to get a ____ for his daugther Kim. You see that he already lose his eye (eww...) and has a eye patch over it. In the end it turns out that the dad has been gambling for nothing as all of the little tablets (used to see which body part you have to give or get) says to give a body part. And the guy in charge says some freaky thing about giving hope to those people. Its sick...

Lucy Liu and her onscreen dad speaks cantonese thoughout the episode. There is english subtitles to them. Lucy's character is able to speak english, but at first and when speaking to her father she speaks cantonese. Lucy Liu has a degree in Chinese Language and Culture, and learned Mandarin not Cantonese. Her pronounciation is off, and is very heavy in accent. Her father also has a strong accent (I'm not sure what region), and I thought it was harder to understand him personally. I caught this episode when fox was rerunning x-files... it was prob on a saturday when I flipped though the channels to see whats on in the afternoon. This is one of two episodes of x-files I have ever seen.

Gilmore Girls "That's What You Get Folks For Makin' Whopee" s7e2

Sydney is a super spy who knows like a million languages, a ploygot, so knowing cantonese wasn't random...

Oct 1- TV rant

So I dropped of the face of the earth (err… I mean the Internet) for quite sometime. No worries I’m still here, but barely.

Seriously school took over my life and even if I just wanted to be lazy I couldn’t. Even small electives are taking over let alone AP classes. I see very little breaks in the near future, sigh… lol its like anyone really misses me.

I haven’t thought of much things relating to TVB much lately. Last series I saw was Forensic Heroes, which was a while ago. Which for a TVB series was pretty average, including filled with many errors but those don’t bother me as much because TVB standards have gone considerably down anyways. Plus the fact I have raised the bar also. One thing the series has done is, making me a fan of Yoyo Mung. Which I really have grown to like, Charm Beneath, really started it. Her character is likeable and I didn’t annoy me (Burning Flames, Armed Reaction IV), or so-so (Healing Hands II)

Jessica Hsuan is officially finally leaving TVB, which is not a surprise since numerous article have stated that before and also seeing her last contract, she was very close to leaving last time also. And she is back with Carri Ma! Go figure… it was obvious that she would go to her. Well its not like Jessica is totally going to disassociate with TVB unlike many others (Louis Koo, Gallen Lo, Flora Chan, Michelle Ye, etc). Which does show where people’s loyalty really lie, but I can totally understand actor’s decision but for a fan its disappointing.

Fung Wan Shui Yuet, all I can say is… well I’m just speechless. And no the cast does not impress me, I need Gallen Lo back to be impressed. One thing is TVB is willing to dish out HKD 1 billion (US$ 133,333,333). Meaning that TVB is paying American network money for a show, the price at a little over 2 million per episode. Because CCTV is collaborating with TVB, FWSY will be aired simultaneously by TVB and CCTV in their prime time slot, making the show have an estimated 140 million viewers (lol corrected info...). (info provided by sehsheh) No wonder TVB is willing to dish out so much for one series. And talk about major promotion for all involved in the series. Jessica’s timely termination of contract? Raymond Lam and Jessica have all been exposed in the China market already and very popular, also Charm Sheh and Sheren Tang with the majorly popular War and Beauty.

Jess in FWSY, Jess being professional again (hey I’m not complaining), Jess with Joe Ma again. But I have to say, maybe this time will be better as its with more of a eviler semi villain… which I liked in Revolving Door of Vengeance. I’m going to let this pairing slide until I see it. Something new, Jess with Michael Wong Man-Tak (whom I quickly googled, grew up in NY, speaks poor Cantonese but great English no doubt, HK actor). He seems familiar to me, of the several HK movies I have seen I have never remembered any of the names of the movies because none of them was worth it. Pairing is interesting something fresh contrasting something… well not fresh rather rotten in a sense (not a fan of Jess/Joe pairing).

Enough with TVB stuff… one more thing I finally finshed TW/CN/HK collaboration A Chinese Ghost Story starring Jessica Hsuan, Daniel Chan, Barbie Hsu. It took me the longest time ever! Over series was interesting kinda… but very draggy and confusing most of the time! Jess being all powerful was cool, and her being emotionless is a good change.

American Television!

I had cut my viewing schedule due to my busy schedule so there is hardly any new shows on my list.

Tuesday- Gilmore Girls has returned, and it doesn’t feel any different even though the creators has left. I can’t believe Rory has nothing to do over the summer. Paris is hilarious with her prep course. By far the funniest part of the episode, love her blunt, straightforward talking all the time. I should seriously take her course, she would get me great SAT scores. The episode was very sad from Lorelei and Luke, and Rory and Logan. Sigh… guess I’m sticking with the series. I flip on House from time to time, I see the repeats when ever there is any, after Bones now and also full rerun in the summer. I seen parts of Standoff, nothing really to make me stick, but its funny and chemistry is there but where is it going to go? They admitted their relationship to the world, actually started dating; I can only see it gong down...like their ratings lately.

Wednesday- Sorry ANTM, as a long time ANTM fan I really am but anything opposite of Bones will be crushed. Hehe recently Leno made a joke about America's Next Top Model and Bones being on at the same time, but he thought they were the same show. Everyone on ANTM is skinny as bones. In Bones, there was a mention of America's Next Top Model. Man in Wall, when DJ Rulz sees Brennan he say "What, the FBI is recruiting from America's Top Model now?” lol that they were mentioned even though it goes both ways but I'm sure that he meant the Models were bones. Not the other way around, though it would work, Emily Deschanel and Michaela Conlin have the model "look" and are tall. And just realized right now that The Biggest Loser is also on at the same time… coincidence? Anyways Bones can been consistant but last episode, last scene really annoyed me. I can understand the first time but the second time was betrayal, but Brennan's reaction might make up for it, hehe can't wait.

Thursday- Grey’s Anatomy all the way. Hehe great news McSteamy is staying! As a regular! Excellent news. I caught Ugly Betty before it, very disappointing. I saw most of the episode and before it finished I had to shut it off. I found it far too predictable and the whole "feel bad for me because I'm a dork" appeal... sorry that was mean but. I just felt every element from the show was unoriginal. I don't hate the show. btw before someone throws a tomato, The lead actress America Ferrera, whom I seen before on screen is a good actress and this show isn't showing her talent.

I don’t watch primetime on any other nights.

Losing her vision, memory and getting those stiff joints and gets tired easily... hehe. j/k! I met Sidney almost a year now (I do mean when we officailly met, since I don't remember too well the em's shoutbox days) Seriously she is one of the best person you will ever meet, she is everything you want in a friend (except her evil twin sister, which is totally different story) I'm so glad that we met on that fateful day, and how things have gone from there. So a toast (lol..because I don't drink..) to Sid, for just being there! and I hope she has a Great Day, a Great year, and a Great Life in front of her. Let her happiness grow and have wonderful memories to keep forever!

My Fall tv Lineup

I’m back kinda… I was bored doing hw so I thought I might write a little something. However I’m holding off on TVB stuff.
So what am I going to talk about? My fall tv lineup, what is worth watching on my screen. Featuring the show Bones, see Wednesday. All times and dates are for US.

Mondays: I pretty eh on the returning Monday shows, why couldn’t they end 7th heaven like they were originally planning to? The show is way way overdue, like Charmed (which thankfully they ended, I was a fan in the beginning then it went downhill) WB had some issues letting go…opposite of Fox (which let go of their series way too easily, over promotion of some series and not caring for some)

24, the Emmy Winning show, I have never caught on to it. Though from the beginning I knew it was going to be a hit (I have a good sense on it though it doesn’t mean they are shows that I would watch)

My Pick for the strangest show: Heros (9/25): People with powers? Time, flying stuff like that? Yeah weird… one of the previews has Asian guy stopping time on a Clock with Chinese numbers.

In the end I think I’m going to be free on Mondays! (Hint: time to talk to me)

Tuesdays: What to do on Tuesday? I have two shows facing off against each other at 8!
Gilmore Girls (9/26) and House (9/5)! Most likely I’ll stick to Gilmore Girls and catch House on the reruns (like I’m doing this summer). But with Gilmore Girls under a new producers it became a grey area though…

At 9, Standoff (9/5) seems okay, they are just purely playing on the sexual connection, at least on the previews they are… Fox must have faith in it since its paired with House.

Wednesday: Another face off though I have to say this one is no contest.

During the summer I caught maybe two episodes of Bones? My interest in it didn’t stick but I did think it was a pretty good show. It wasn’t until I caught the season finale did it capture me entirely heart, soul and all. It has to be one of the best season finales I have seen. I cannot help but to feature this show on my blog…. Too bad it’s a day late because the Season 2 premiered yesterday.

Bones is not your typical procedural show (CSI, Law and Order, etc). It plays on the dynamics of the character, it’s a character driven show. Much lighter tone of CSI is what I would describe Bones, it has humor in what seems like dark cases. Based on a real life forensic anthropologist and bestselling author Kathy Reichs.

You have to main lead Dr. Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and Steely Booth (David Boreanaz). She is a Forensic Anthropologist at Jeffersonian (your made up Smithsonian here in the real world) and he is FBI. Brennan is the only forensic anthropologist around so she is loaned out to the FBI (Jeffersonian is a private and state funded institute, so they kinda have to).
They assist in murder investigations where the bodies are too burned, mangled are destroyed beyond recognition for normal autopsies to be conducted. (Yes graphic show so don’t eat while watching, and remind yourself everything is fake!, even though they are convincing props)

Brennan as brilliant as she is has serious issues, one lacking pop culture knowledge (which is hilarious, she says “I don’t know what that means” on references to pop culture…), she lacks “people skills” which is why she is in the lab all the time. But after she is forced to help (consult) the FBI, she want to be part of the full investigation on all the cases she works on, effectively making her partners with Booth. Oh did I metioned she is trained in three types of martial arts, skilled shooter, and extremely smart (has three degrees)? Add she is also a bestselling author too... lol. You may not like her character in the beginning but she will grow on you, I myself love this character. I can promise she will win you over with innocent naivety and also her intelligence.

Yeah… but Booth has all the “people skills” that Brennan lacks, which makes this partnership perfect. Booth is trying to balance his “cosmic rap sheet”, atone to all the killings he committed when he was a sniper.

Anyways Brennan (who Booth nicknamed “Bones”) and Booth have the opposite attracts thing going on. They are so different on so many levels; they can’t have small talk without arguing, the bickering between the two is hilarious and awfully cute. They balance each other out in a very odd way but it totally works. From the start (I went back and watched all the episodes, yes I was that hooked on the finale) the chemistry were there, first as sexual tension then it built more of a friend chemistry without taking some of that other chemistry away. There are those subtle things that they do, that you just can’t help to smile at. Amazing and very convincing chemistry here. But they are just both in denial right now, and confused with thier feelings.

Clearly there is some great writing here, there are so many great scenes, and the dialogue hits the spot every time. There is some amazing character development; there are no flat characters here. I love seeing how Brennan opens up to Booth. Dedicating her book to Booth and taking his advice on the title, its so touching. You will understand if you saw her character in the beginning she was cold to the bone. Which she still sometimes to other people. An ongoing plot with Brennan’s parents, which is pretty captivating.

Oh I forgot to mention the squint squad! (Booth’s name for the “the people with high IQs and have basic reasoning skills”(the people who squint at things hence the name squint))
This show has great supporting characters, who are part of Brennan’s team. Best friend, Angela Montenegro (The actress is half Chinese btw), squint and very sociable, she makes the holograms and put the faces on the skull, the “artist”, and very good people reader, very non squint like. Zack Addy is Dr. Brennan's brilliant young assistant, who is your typical geek and often lost. Dr. Jack Hodgins is an expert on spores, mineral, and bugs. Who so happen to be extremely rich (family is the single largest donator, making him the boss but doesn’t want people to know affecting his career) He is also into conspiracy… lol. Dr. Daniel Goodman was the boss before, pretty interesting character, and a former archeologist. He is the one who gave Brennan her job despite her poorer credentials back then against her professor. It’s interesting how they all work together.

Acting is top notch on both Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz parts. Emily is very convincing as her character, she can cry at the right moment never overdoing it on emotional scenes. Perfect as far I can see it. Including a courtroom scene, where it became personal. Reminds me of GF scene but that’s a totally different. David is just David, he is just hilarious. But his role doesn’t require a lot of acting anyways. Anyone can play this role, but I wouldn’t change it for the world, he is just perfect too. I seen Angel, but this role seems so much more like him, he smiles!

All in all, what I’m just saying is that the show (Bones) is extremely witty, fun, crime solving, touching show. That I highly recommend, in my opinion are better then similar shows like CSI and House. I blame FOX lack of promotion, I know the first episode wasn’t great so it lost a lot of viewer, but it really has gotten a whole lot better.

Lol I know that was long, but what show you may wonder is competing against? America Next Top Model (9/20) of course! But the show is more about the drama now, and I must admit I don’t like a lot of the contestants and winners. So for how many cycles it has been on, I have seen, but I have to say goodbye to it.

Thursday: ABC moved Grey’s Anatomy (9/21) to Thursday against powerhouse CSI. Which I think its stupid on ABC part… anyways I will be watching Grey. I’m more into character drama’s. There is a nice ensemble here and it works. Can’t wait.

Oh yeah I suddenly am interested in Survivor (9/14) because of the controversial groups spilt by race. Ugly Betty (9/28) is so on because of success of Devil Wear Prada.

Friday: Free! Until winter comes because Bones switches to Fridays in the winter.

Saturday: Free again

Sunday: America’s Next Top Model encore, and Brother and Sister (9/24) seems okay. Few Former Alias people are there. I can’t say I miss Alias anymore. Its time was due glad they didn’t drag it on too long =) Desperate Housewives (9/24) is so overrated, though I love Bree.

Its feels good to write something for my blog again. I’m not back yet till tons of things I haven’t finished. But I will be back soon enough, at least I think. Less about TVB stuff though.

Not TVB!: You have possibly came to this blog to see TVB news/opinions, but I’m sorry, this is no where TVB related. This doesn’t even have to do with Hong Kong. I haven’t watched any TVB series for two weeks already. I’m trying to finish watching Vagabond Vigilante and then start Bar Benders. Yeah I was informed that Ap scores were sent out by Asia over at her blog (Congrats to her again!) . So last night I kinda was nervous because I wasn't sure how well I was going to do. I remember being bored out of my mind in the testing room ( a huge gym at a vacant school used for admin of district now and sports practice). I must of finshed more than and hour and a half early. I finished a whole box of orange tic tacs (fav) that I bought from a nearby 7-11 (also some gum...) when I was out for lunch (I didn't eat much in fear of getting s stomach ache, I did have a bagel and iced coffee) Yeah that day was pretty good missed most of school saw some old friends from another high school ( yeah akward situation because I haven't kept in touch... people who say that going to different H.S won't effect friendship is a total lie.)

Enough about that day ( I know getting boring) OK I got a 5. Which came at a total surprise (even though I said it was very easy) because I totally bs one of my essays, I had my timeline all wrong and wasn't totally sure... yeah I made up some stuff. Good thing about Ap is that they don't have time to read the whole essay just have a kick ass intro! Oh yeah I didn't mention which Ap test I took, it was the AP Global History. Nothing extremely hard anyways.

World Cup 2006 Over

Never being a Soccer/Football fan, I decided to catch the final match between Italy and France. One of the reason why I never enjoyed watching it is because the ball repeatedly goes from one side to another and back again and back to other side... until someone scores. (I hear a announcer screaming GOAL!!!!!!!!!!)

Anyways this final match was much more exciting. It was the finals I had to see it. I gotta say I was rooting for France. I just don't like how Italy plays... very sneaky. So I was disappointed when Zinedine Zidane ended his career by headbutting this guy right in his chest and getting a red card for it. He was a great penalty kicker, maybe if he didn't get thrown out thing might have change. Its over and done with. Italy won in penalty kicks. Finally World Cup is OVER!

Jessica Hsuan attended the Superman premire in HK. (Hehe you can see the Superman necklace, and looking good there) But the big question on everyone's mind is Whether Jess will renew her contract with TVB or will she go to per-series contract? (Serious serious doubt she will ever entirely abandon TVB for mainland) According to the article the contract will expire September (So Soon!) Whatever she chooses I don't think it will impact the number of series, she might film one per year to make TVB happy. Who knows, anyways....

Jess will go to Singapore soon to shoot a series in english (Just like what Flora did) Looking to hearing Jess's "English" (I put it in quotes not meaning that its not english but english english... lol) If you asking is her english good, she did spend 13 years in England up till her graduation from the prestigious Imperial. Anyways looking foward to it.

Betrayal of TVB?

Honestly I feel a bit of lost when you see TVB actors leave whether to ATV or Mainland. So seeing that ex-tvb actors now are leads in an ATV series, I feel a bit of betrayal.

I totally understand why they went to ATV, TVB is a rather ruthless, dominate, and quite ignorant at times. TVB does not provide a living for most who work under them. Most do sponserships to get extra cash so they can live in the world of the celeb world , where you must have the high fashion clothes and where you are in the public eye meaning you must present yourself in a certain way. TVB just gives you fame, more then ATV can ever give. TVB has a habit of promoting certain artist and ONLY them, no matter if you have talent or not, if TVB likes you. A paved path to stardom.

So we can't blame them for switching to ATV. Better pay, better hours, a chance to lead in a series, your company actually caring about you. So can't blame them.

There have been many switchs between TVB and ATV, yet they all manage to come back to TVB. Astrid Chan is back, its been a long long time. Sunny Chan came back last year. Michael Tao came back, Fimed Shine on You, Love Bond and Fantasy Hotel last year(but hasn't filmed anything else with TVB)

I really wish TVB wasn't so dominating, then they would have to pay more attention to thier artist, and come up with better plots and scripts! Come on TVB shape up!

So is this batrayal? I say the answer is no

TVB Pays Restaurants in the US to Advertise?

Okay, this is weird. It's .. off topic in a way. It's kinda about my personal life too but oh well, I thought it was weird..

I was with my uncle on Saturday. We ate at this restaurant named "King of Buffet" its a Chinese cuisine. n a buffet.

When I walked in, they were playing Under the Canopy of Love's theme song sung by Kevin Cheng and Niki Chow. I was surprised and told my brother and uncle about the series and about the song and they said it must be a coincidence or something. Then after we ordered our drinks, I went to the bathroom and on the bathroom door was TVB's sign. You know, the symbol.. blue on top, then green in the middle and then red at the very bottom. The restaurant played various TVB songs..

After I finished using the bathroom, they started playing "Detective Investigation Files IV" theme sang by Edmond Leung. It was weird how they played TVB themes and on their bathroom door, there is the 'sign' of TVB. I asked the cashier guy about the songs they were playing and why there is TVB's sign.

Then he said that TVB pays them to advertise. As in, TVB pays King of Buffet to uh.. promote TVB by playing themes n stuff.

I didn't quite believe that. Why would TVB pay a restaurant to... advertise?
Er maybe the restaurant is just.. weird? Can anyone come up with a better conclusion?

I'm in this weird mode right now, so non-TVB. I stopped watching CBWH (I assure all I will continue) because of all my exams. So I'm not watching anything TVB. I lost interest in news related to TVB. Not sure what is going on. I really think I need a break from TVB. This weekend I just watched 4 movies. three action I rented and then I had enough and went out and watched Cars. All four were to a surprise, pretty good films . All enjoyable though one of them a tad too long. oh well.

Just right now I went back to CBWH to look for a particular scene to make screen caps. Makes me want to see it now. But I must resist!

My Fav parts of the show:
1. When they had to guess what english word it was (I guess it right!) It so funny the guys reaction (None of them speak English well..haha) But the girls team (Jess, Flora and Charm) I know Flora and Jess have excellent english. I believe Charm too. Anyways the Guys came up with Lover... haha no where close. it started with Nov and and ended with ber.. gee what else could it be. Woot Girls rock!
2. Seeing Jess and Flora's close relationship. Its'nt it nice to see they have such a close relationship. Jess coaching Flora so she can win second. Its sweet.
3. Charmaine's amazing photographic memory! Very Impressive.

Other things:
Jess looks really tan! I'm guessing after AMOC.
Bowie and Gallen are rather smart when it comes to numbers.
Funny how Fei Fei kept on pointing out Flora's weak cantonese. "finally you're useful" haha

Its been a while since the last one, this blog is closing in to 100,000!

I know some of you guys are laughing... whats the big deal with 100,000? Well to me it means alot. it seems like I just started this blog like it was yesterday. I had some time, and some thoughts and a little inspiration by Asia (Thanks =) your blog is awesome) , I decided to start this.

It grew little by little and had its ups and downs and what seems to be frequent hiatus. But I'm happy at where it has gone. Happy that people still come here.

lol I found my blog the most random. I don't follow up on features that I start. When I think of something new I just write it and forget about it later. There is always something different. lol like what happened to the "Its in the eyes", well the thing is I was busy one Sunday (well actually Sundays are always busy but this one is particular was very busy) and it just slipped my mind. Next week I missed it too and now I just completely stopped it for now anyways. Who know I may just start it again soon!

My Plans: I really don't have many since I have time this summer might as well. Where to vent my anger? There isn't a better place then to vent it here on my personal blog.

warning I guess... this will be a rant...

Lets see, lets start with the TVB related ... well kinda... sorta related. Anyways, I have known about the 2nd (or in this case 2st? <--- some bad english here) China TV awards. Well last year Jessica won it for Favorite HK actress along with Bobby Au-Yeung (Favorite Hk Actor). The results are from votes. The votes are casted via text message only from mainland China (so this is a China award even though they have categories in HK and Taiwan) Well this year the votes were casted for a period of time (a month ot two) From the start Jessica was leading by thousands, it was a huge lead. Then there was something was a recount.. don't exactly remember. And the lead did drop. Still she was far ahead. I remember around 3 days before the voting ends she was still in the lead but Others started to catch up pretty quickly (Last minute voting?) When it was all over Jessica fell to third place behind Charmaine and Kenix. Grr... I say!

What happened! Sigh most of you know me as a die hard Jess fan... such a hard defeat to take. I know Jessica's popularity has dropped because its been a while since she had a huge series (She had LMS but it seriously a Jess series... more like Roger.. I mean "Ah Wong" everywhere, you can say Square Pegs (02') but yet again its "Ah Wong" all the time... Golden Faith and that Mainland series? something Love? yeah Where is my Love... also with Gallen Lo. There was also A Chinese Ghost Story.. a huge Taiwan production... I'm guessing China also watch Taiwan stuff because the Taiwan actors had a huge amount of votes too (I'm sure that was a huge popularity booster because she won rave reviews). All this was in 2003... three yearsago so it kinda expected that you can loose some fans. Well this rant is helping alot with my anger. I know breathe in breathe out.... in... out.

hmm anything else on my mind... I'm ALMOST off from school. So Close yet so far because I have tons of regents to take. Oh yeah I hate summer assignments... just ruins your summer. For my research class I think its either 40-90 hours this summer (I'm getting mixed info here) Also AP stuff.. like huge outlines...etc. And what else... the yearly summer book (Already finshed mine... it was enjoyable) I guess this ends my rant...

Parallel Paths ||

Flora Chan and Bernice Liu.

Their starting points may have not been the same but it seems like Bernice is walking on a path parallel to Flora’s.

Before Fame: They both are from western countries, Flora from Boston, Mass and Bernice from a small town of Prince Rupert, Canada.

Starting point:

Flora Chan- A reporter for the English language channel TVB Pearl. Who was offered a role in Files of Justice V and later signed with TVB

Bernice Liu- The complete opposite, more traditional way to get into TVB, Bernice won a pageant Miss International Award

Both danced at a very young age and had dreams of being a dancer, but unfortunately Flora was injured and her dream was crushed.

Flora Chan was born in Hong Kong and at a very young age she moved to the US. When she moved to the US she focused on her English. Therefore her Cantonese was quite weak and unable to read Chinese. Similarly, Bernice Liu has very weak Cantonese. Her parents never forced her to learn. She entered the pageant as way to improver her weak Cantonese, but she ended up winning the pageant.

Along the road:

Flora’s first series was Files of Justice V among a grand cast of Bobby Au-Yueng, Michael Tong, Jessica Hsuan, and Ada Choi to name a few. She caught the attention of HK audience and signed with TVB.

Bernice Liu signed with TVB soon after winning Miss Chinese International. She already was known in HK. She made a cameo in Golden Faith. Her first series was the ancient version of Virtues of Harmony. She found much fame as her “Princess” role.

Moses Chan: Their Lucky and Rumor Star

When we think of Bernice Liu these days, who is the onscreen companion that immediately pops to our heads? Moses Chan of course! Moses and Bernice have starred in 2 TVB series, together. Both, playing as each other’s love interest at one point or another. Their most memorable would probably lean toward Love Bond. Who could forget the awesome chemistry they build with each other; bringing lots of laughter from us. But that’s now. How about a couple years back? Before the Bermoses era came along. Remember “Family Man?” Flora was paired up with Moses in this comedic series back in 2002. Back then, Flora and Moses were rumored to be the “cutest” couple. See the similarities? Here’s a little extra: Paul Chun was Flora’s dad in FM, while in LB, he was Bernice’s dad. Flora was the 2nd daughter; while likewise, Bernice was the second daughter. Flora won the Best Actress award when paired up with Moses. While Bernice “almost” won the Best Improved Actress when paired up with Moses. (shrugs) Just a little FYI.

Singing Career

Flora launched off her singing career, singing TVB’s “Feminine Masculinity” theme song with Gallen Lo back in 1999. Since then, Flora has continued singing numerous theme/sub-themes to many of TVB series that she starred in. Same goes with Bernice. Taking part as one of the VOH cast, and went on functions and performances, Bernice singing career slowly unfolds before our eyes. First off with singing a duet with Frankie Lam (another TVB “siu sungs”) in VOH’s Happy Harmony cd and continues from there. Flora released albums (one due soon!), seems Bernice is planning her own too. With Paco, Gold Label manager giving his support, Bernice is sure to follow Flora’s music path.

The help from Pingyins

Although Flora’s Cantonese reading and speaking proficiency has improved a lot since her debut, but it was no piece of cake for her. Flora openly admitted that when she first started in the entertainment industry, she had to use pingyin in order to read the scripts or anything! It was frustrating! Well…can’t blame her for it, since it was a hard and crucial time for Flora, when as a newbie in entertainment circle. Bernice was a little bit luckier with her weak point. Bernice’s dad helps out and translated most of Bernice’s script into to pingyin for her! Translated or not, Bernice had to work hard herself in order to get what she achieved today; losing her western accents and able to recognize lots of the characters. Without the pingyin system, how could 2 of TVB’s past and present actresses do so well and become one of favorites of all time! Almost impossible!

The other “man” in their lives

Many of you might not know this but Flora was married for quite sometime. Back when she was rising to fame. Her husband helped her a lot with her Chinese and gave a lot of moral support. No Bernice is not married but she had a very significant figure in her life, her father, he father has stayed in Hong Kong with Bernice as translator, bodyguard, everything else, and a father all at the same time. But unfortunately Flora has since parted with her husband. But these two “men” have helped them so much when they needed them the most.

Note: I am no way comparing the two’s acting ability. Just the path their career has taken, and the many similarities between the two.

(tsk tsk…) After having a heated argument with Michael and being drunk, Jessica falls to the ground; causing her to lie prone to the floor. Jessica thought it wasn’t hard work, and actually does the fall herself! “If I actually fall down myself, it’ll look more realistic. Besides, I tend to do that anyways.”

Michael revealed that he and Jessica will be having a kissing scene coming up, and needs to prepare for it. Praising Jessica as being a very happy and fun person to be around with; Michael felt no awkwardness towards their upcoming kiss: “Everyone will get used to filming a kissing scene. So it’s just normal. But to make it more realistic, you and your partner must be comfortable with each other.”

Episodes 2-4
On Friday two days ago,
I rewatched episode 2 because my mom hasn't seen that episode. So we continued watching and finished episode 4. I think I watched till like 1 in the morning.

What to think what to think....

Ada: I think she was quite awesome right up to the point were she starts yelling. Its too fast... anyone else thinks that? Anyways something else about when she yells I don't like. Other then that I'm pretty pleased with her character. Nice and Evil... lol

Self Defense: I have to say immediately after Charmaine said about no one is going to trust them if they told the truth I knew trouble's ahead. Because lying always have lots of troubles that follow. Even though what Charmaine said is completely correct, she totally overreacted. She said that they wouldn't believe nothing happened to them. Well I thought of another series Lady Fan starring Jessica Hsuan and Joe Ma, urgg stupid misunderstandings... well it was during the time Joe did not trust Jess and they ordered a "test", couldn't they have done the same here?

"Its Hard to be a Women"- This series should really be called this... this whole series is how hard it is to be a women. Every woman in the series has suffered.
- Ada- married an old man, had a child, and now carries on his family for him.
-Gigi- Educated, bright, yet she was forced to marry someone she doesn't love
-Charm- People in her village makes fun of her because she is bad luck. Like when her brothers dies, canceled marriage, and death of parents. And her speech about how they are "only women"
- Maggie- She keeps the secret of her husband even if it means people will think that she is unable to conceive a child. She is mocked at by others yet she remains loyal. She is willing to conceive a child with another man if he wants her too.

Kenny and Maggie- its kinda sweet how far she is willing to go for her husband and her unwavering loyalty to him. In the end he was unable to allow her go "down the path"

Pity Factor- lol the pity factor is on overdrive again. You can pity everyone!

Umm can't think of anything else... if I do think of other things I'll add them on.

New TVSF

My thoughts on the new TVSF:

TVSF itself it kinda of a legend in itself. Not many people are still around after so many years. I myself was not a member as I didn't discover it soon enough. You hear about the infamous "letter" and the closing of TVSF. TVSS arose soon after, I join this forum and where I met some really cool people... some in very odd ways. Who would of thought spam (something that I detest now) would bring people together ;-) One thing that I loved about these forums was so much LJ talk =) Happy times. Even though it was obviously focused to Viets, it didn't bother me.

The downfall of TVSS became evident soon after, it started to lose popularity and the Admin and some of the staff (too all people who were staff before, I am not talking about you guys..you know who you are) were inefficent. The closing of TVSS was without warning. Guess the Admin just let the domain expire and everything else too. It was just more of a shock that it just was gone just like that. I had already lost much interest in the forum be partly remain because of friends there and LJ of course.

I joined another forum AF a little while before TVSS's shutdown. AF could be considered another on of TVSF's spawn but I feel it more on its own. The layout was different and it was focused not only on Viets but embraced other Ethnicities (not saying that TVSS didn't) AF I believe surpassed what TVSF had.

TVSF was the foundation of Asian(mainly TVB) Forums and Sites. Trying to revive it makes me a bit uneasy (too simlar), but I have registared and will just give it a shot because it wouldn't hurt.

My computer troubles

Do not read if you do not care ... lol

Haha lets talk about my computer troubles ...lol

Well it was just three days ago when I started to feel something was wrong. I told ny Dad and he kinda brushed it off. Oh well so when I came home one day and turned on my computer, not sure what sound I heard... something like a loud click? Well I heard something down there and my computer shut down. I was on the floor at that time looking for the smell that I smelled. Without hesitiation I shout off the power supply in th back. I turned my computer around and I saw smoke coming out from the back.

What happened exactly?
Well I think that some of the wires in it fused together... eh I didn't care that much I just knew it was total. Oh well.

Why did it happen?
Too much power was drawn from my computer. Too many fans. Why did I have so many? Well it because my CPU is VERY hot. It reached 50's with all three fans on if I have many programs running. haha this isn't the first time in recent months... other time it was only the 12V that was completely down.

So now I have my computer back and I took the box cover off (so no more blow ups)

Good News and Bad News

Lets start with the good!
AHH rumours are true Julian (Chi Lam) Cheung and Anita Yuen are having a baby!

Its has been confirmed that she is THREE months pregnant!
HA I knew it! She is pregnant! AHHH! can't believe it! CONGRATS! Well I believe it is some superstition of sorts that to not to announce pregnancy before 1st trimester...something like that. Lol Chinese and thier superstitions, well one time that the Media wasn't wrong about =P

I can imagine this baby (and any others one he has) with cute dimples just like his! I swear this kids is going to be the cutest little thing! Aww I'm going to want to pinch the kid's cheeks!

Now the Bad....Nnadia's cancer has came back. It saddens me that she has to once again face this.

Best wishes to Nnadia for a complete and speedy recovery!

lol I watched one complete episode and I have to say I am very disappointed so far at least.

I feels that there is too much going on so fast. Right off the bat Moses is strung with firworks and his "lover" is burning to death.

For all the publicity, I feel its not worth it. But for a regular series it would be okay. I haven't seen Ada or the other main character yet so I will have to wait for till they appear and get more into the plot to make my final verdict. Who knows the tides may change... lol I'm so late in DOP but oh well

Episode 1 Featured Character

Charmaine's Character (Ka Chun Fan): For a series that is so packed with drama Charmaine gives a breath of fresh air.
From her walk to her umm... forgetfulness she has cause me to unexpentantly to laugh.

* Her Walk/Run- I think it is one of the funniest parts, her running is so...akward! She swings her arms in a weird manner and her legs are raised so high up! haha... she runs everywhere in the series. Even when she does not have to! like when she runs back after making her delivery. Someone has to tell her to slow down...lol. LOOK what happened she slid down a hill into a watering hole!
* Her smile- I love that smile! but she gives it to everyone including men (giving wrong signs) lol I so agree... it really funny to see her smile! her front teeth are showing a bit too much though
*Tendency to forget things- She runs back after remembering she left something. I can't help but to give out a little laugh.
*Spilled ~~milk~~ water- Because of the way she walk she spills ALOT of water! well goo thing its raining because if it didn't she would have alot of water missing ( I know once it reaches a certain amount it can't spill no more) anyways by the time she got back alot of it would have evaporated. haha... whats the point of going so far for so little?

“At the Base of Lion Mountain” to be air on May 14th

TVB’s new rendition of “At the Base of Lion Mountain” (獅子山下) will be airing this Sunday, May 14, 2006 @ 7:00pm (HK) on Jade channel. The whole series/show will be composed of 10 episodes, and with each episode there’s to be a special meaning or moral that teaches a lesson about life, love, family, and friends.

It has been over 30 years since HK premiered “At the Base of Lion Mountain” in 1973. For a long time, this series has been memorable to a lot of Hong Kongers (a term I just learned from RIta!); since the whole storyline was based off the reflection of Hong Kong’s social and economic status. After such a long period of time, TVB has made new rendition of it and with an even stronger cast. Eric Tsang is the head producer and takes part as one of the cast, along with Jessica Hsuan, Jackie Liu, Wai Ying Hung, etc. Joey Yung will be singing the theme song, and with the usage of a special audio device, it blends her singing with her late mentor’s, Roman Tam; making it into a classic duet.

Eric Tsang’s (曾志偉) character will be a father who’s having communication problems with his son. Oblivious to new technologies that is rapidly entering society and influencing teens, Eric’s mission is to try to learn as much as he can of today's advancements; hoping to bring his relationship with his son a little closer.

Jessica Hsuan (宣萱) and Jackie Liu (呂頌賢) will play as an unmarried couple in the show (so NO, they are NOT dating!). Together, they’ll solve mysteries and find hidden treasures (I assume very much like the Biter Bitten characters, if you’ve seen it). The characters that Jessica and Jackie portrays should be very similar to their personalities in real life; a possibility that that’s why they were cast the roles.

Ok I just read this the headline "Sonija Kwok to film new movie with Louis Koo" and I could feel my blood pressure raising!

There have been recent reports that Sonija will be filming a new movie with Louis Koo Tin Lok.

Yesterday evening on May 3, 2006, Louis Koo and Jessica Hsuan were spotted eating dinner together. Louis Koo and Jessica Hsuan arrived around 6:30 P.M. walking hand in hand into the restaurant smiling brightly.

As soon as they got their seats, it seemed as if Louis was making jokes or doing something funny. Jessica kept laughing which made Louis smile 120 watts.

After dinner, they were sitting around joking and laughing happily. When asked if they were dating, Louis answered, “Yes, we’ve been dating!”

Moments later, Bosco Wong and Myolie Wu came in the restaurant, seeing Louis Koo and Jessica Hsuan, they immediately rushed over. Asking his idol and his older ‘sister’ how to keep things down low, Jessica replied, “We didn’t keep it down low! Back then, reporters didn’t pay much attention to us. I’ve been rumored with Gallen Lo Kar Leung numerous times. Louie and I have always been close back in 1999-2002 but reporters never to have rumored us about relationships. Instead, friends and family have always asked me if I was dating him.”

Louis added, “We come over to each other’s houses a load of times recently but no one ever suspected us. Bosco, if you weren’t so popular, you wouldn’t have been caught dating Myolie!”

Obviously embarrassed when complimented by Louis, Bosco waved bye and went on with his date Myolie.

Later on, Louis and Jessica accepted an interview; they could be in the mood for anything!

Reporter: When did you guys start this relationship?

Louis: Ehh… in 2003.

Jessica: Yeah, we met a while back filming in Class of Distinction.

Reporter: How was it that you guys created great sparks for Fei and Quin?

Louis: We were very close friends back then so we felt more comfortable acting together.

Yesterday, Bobby Au Yeung and Jessica Hsuan were filming the “kissing” scene for their new series, “Do Cheung Fung Wan.” Although Bobby calls Jessica his “old friend” (老死) and has known her for a long time, never were they needed to film a kissing scene before! No wonder Bobby was so nervous; constantly sweating and leaving behind a residue of sweat on the corner of Jessica’s mouth! (eww….)

Before actually filming the “kissing scene,” Jessica leaked out that Bobby was so nervous; he had already started chewing gum for the scene right before it! “I don’t understand! Normally male actors should be happy that they could film a kissing scene, and not nervous! I’m not worried about it, since compared to my past passionate kisses with Michael Tao and Louis Koo, this is real easy for me!” said Jessica, laughing. “But with Bobby, there is a little bit difference. I can’t imagine myself doing a kissing scene with him. He looks so much like Garfield! How can I imagine passionately kiss a cartoon!”

During the filming, Jessica and Bobby had to kiss about 7-8 times, in order to get the different angles necessary to for the scene. Since had to kiss so many times, it made Bobby very nervous, causing Jessica to blurt out “My lips are all wet now!” Bobby was asked later if he was scared that his wife would be jealous for filming a kissing scene. Bobby laughed and said, “Of course not! My wife even laughed and said that I got to kiss Jessica Hsuan, Yoyo Mung, all these beautiful girls! Knowing that it’s part of my job, she’s not worry at all.” Jessica also said that she’s not worried, even if she has a boyfriend; it was all part of her job.

I can say that most of the people reading this blog is not in HK. It is hard for someone outside HK to understand their lifestyle, their way. Looking from the outside in doesn’t give the whole view, but what if we had an inside look in HK.

A few months ago I had a pleasant visit from my aunt who lives in Hong Kong. Hehe, she was fun and we even watched all of Golden Faith together! During the viewing of Golden Faith, she said that she vaguely remembers seeing small fragments of the show. Then she said that she hardly ever watch TVB anymore! (screaming inside…) Thinking back to my last visit to Hong Kong I realized that hardly anyone was ever home. Always out on the “fast track”. Out of the whole month I think we ate in like seven times. There was a different restaurant everyday. I have to say it was yummy mmm…food. (I do say I love the train system in HK)

Something about Hong Kong that some must realize is that most people in Hong Kong spend most of their income on living. Apartments are very expensive because of the lack of space Hong Kong has. (Something shocking I learned that the land bought in HK isn’t actually your forever. The deed only last for x amount of years and then the land is return to the HK government and resold again. I have always wondered how come the HK government has so much land to give out and it seems never run out of land, but in fact they are just reselling land over and over. Sounds unfair, it is. Something that is starting to be used in China too…they took the idea from HK)

Lol I got off topic al little there. But I just wanted to point out HK life is very fast and it’s a pretty though life out there. Reason HK population has been dropping is because Kids are very expensive these days. More exactly the books needed for school are very expensive.

Back to my conversation with my Aunt, she said the main reason she didn’t watch series is because she is just busy, Her shift at work varied and to follow a series was quite difficult.

Something that has troubled me is the unpredictability of ratings.

Who would of thought one of the most talked about series LWOLAP but do so horribly in ratings? When TVB moved back the date there was an upraising of protest. But when it finally aired the ratings were very disappointing. I haven’t seen it so I can’t comment.

I was looking at the Top Series from 1997- present.

Here are some observations

1999- It like a desert that year… the highest averaged rating was 32? Lol thinking back to what happen that year. I finally understand why… even I was diverted from TVB. The Taiwan series HZGG (Pearl Princess) was aired on HK’s other free channel ATV, which it drew impressive ratings. (umm whoops I was also one of the people who was drawn into the hype…lol I was obsessed at that point)

Anyways, one of my all time favorite series was aired at this time Detective Investigation Files IV… ahh Louis and Jessica…*heart*

War of Gender the series with the highest single ratings was the third highest average rated series with its average ratings of 35 pts.

Sigh one of my biggest shock was from two series who had disappointing ratings

HK Audience: What’s Up LWOLAP vs. UTCOL

Inspired by your post “HK Audience: What’s Up” I have decided to do a little bit of comparisons between LWOLAP and UTCOL, mostly for 2 reasons: 1) I’m bored out of my mind in my Organic Chemistry class and 2) just because I want to know, too. hehe…=D

LWOLAP vs. UTCOL

Lethal Weapons of Love and Passion. One of TVB’s most talked about and anticipating series ever! So why are the ratings so bad? Is it because of the storyline? the cast? the genre? I don’t know. What’s the most surprising is that a series like Under the Canopy of Love could way surpass them, getting a peak of 37 pts for their finale! That’s crazy ratings, when I found the ending just average! Here is what I’ve compared between the two:

The Love Triangle:

*Charmaine + Raymond + Sonija*

The deceitful Sonija; playing with Raymond’s heart to the end. Raymond, oblivious to Sonija’s lies and blinded from Charmaine’s love. Charmaine, naïve but faithful; giving so much, but receiving so little. A typical love triangle that have the audience hating one side (Sonija) and loves the other (Charmaine). Who should Raymond go with? Does it matter? Obviously not! Since the ratings have been so horrible.

*Bosco + Niki + Kevin*

Kevin, a wonderful guy; smart and successful, but not cherishing what he had until it’s too late. Niki, a very naïve girl that thinks of others before herself; gives her full trust to people without expecting it to be returned. Bosco, a very sensitive guy, who’s loyalty to his friends and family is beyond limits. An absolute classic with a very original storyline. With fresh chemistry, and a little humor to added to it, it’s understandable that the ratings are good. Even I can’t decide whom TVB should pair whom: Niki w/ Bosco or Niki w/ Kevin. hmm…

The Chemistry:

I don’t know how others view this, but I find the chemistry between Sonija, Raymond, and Charmaine in LWOLAP so awkward! The age difference is getting into me the most. No matter how young and beautiful Sonija and Charmaine looks, they’re just so much older than Raymond! Especially when they have to call him 大哥, it makes no sense! Don’t think me wrong, I’m a diehard Raymond and Charmaine fan (Sonija? ehh…) but for them as a couple…not good. Bad call from TVB to expect great chemistry from them. Like TVBsquare once said, “Hydrogen plus Oxygen equals water, it is the concept of chemistry.” I say, chemistry should not only encompass hydrogen and oxygen, but other elements as well. Making H2O = TNT (a bomb!), leaving lasting impressions on the viewers. TVB did just that, but did H2O + TNT = a diffuse unit, unable to spark an interest among us viewers.

UTCOL, on the other hand, is very simple production, with no exciting fight scenes or dramatic sound effects. Yet the chemistry of the cast is what draws us on along with it; wanting to continue to share the laughter, share the moment, and share the love in watching the series. The chemistry between Niki, Bosco, and Kevin is not just a regular H20 chem, but a bomb! (TNT). No way can it be great with just Kevin and Niki or Niki and Bosco or Bosco and Kevin. It has to encompass all 3 for it to make it work! It doesn’t have to be all about love (but it’s better since it did! hehe…), but also had friendship, family, and many laughs that made us like it more and more. A complete success! Never in a million years, will I find such chemistry! I guess as TVBGeneration once said “TVB is home to several underdogs who are waiting to bite back.” I say, Under the Canopy of Love proves her theory right. They do bite back! With vengeance!

The Performance:

*Niki Chow (UTCOL) vs. Charmaine Sheh + Sonija Kwok (LWOLAP)*

Ok, I’m pretty sure, many of you will automatically think that Charmaine’s acting (& Sonija? ehh…) would beat Niki’s hands down; mostly because of their experience in the industry for so many years. BUT, I found Niki’s character very enjoyable in UTCOL. Not great, but good. Improving slowly with every series she does. (This is Niki’s 3rd series with TVB.) What I found in Charmaine and Sonija’s acting in LWOLAP is that it is so similar to Perish in the Name of Love’s character! But besides the point that they both know kung-fu in this one, (hee yah!) and were sisters in the other, their performance is only so-so. Charmaine’s acting is good. I love her, but there’s no improvement. Nothing “wow” or “Oh my god!” about it. Just good, as usual. Sonija? Ehh…I’m not even going to waste my time with her. (if you guys don’t know by now, I’m not a Sonija Kwok fan; especially not since she stole part of Louis Koo from Jessica Hsuan in ASITP!) I don’t know if it’s a curse on Charmaine right now or not, but her series are just not doing so well when aired. For example: her series, Yummy Yummy, average performance, average ratings; Always Ready, cute character, but gets draggy, again, bad ratings!; Leathal Weapons of Love and Passion, good acting, but nothing special, bad bad ratings. I guess the audiences are waiting, just as I am, for something special coming out of Charmaine’s performance. Niki?...she’s doing pretty good in ratings. Most of her series are really fresh and funny. For example: The Gentle Crackdown; so funny! First time I’ve seen her, okay acting, w/ very high ratings! Under the Canopy of Love, improved on acting, 30+ pts in ratings (average!). I’m beginning to think if TVB really did give the right award to the right person (most-improved actress)! hmm…nope, I don’t think so (not yet, that is).

*Raymond Lam + Bosco Wong (LWOLAP) vs. Kevin Cheng + Bosco Wong (UTCOL)*

This is a definite, hard one to compare; with both sides having TVB’s most promoted young actors (Raymond, Bosco, and Kevin) and both sides having Bosco Wong in it! (hehe… =D )making it real hard for me to compare without getting some fans mad! But as Toomanysidesofme once said, “We all have our own views, our own thoughts. I just like to share mine and to inform you guys recent Stuff about TVB!” I agree with what she said, so I’m saying, I’m going to go on typing and not caring what you think! (Please don’t “bash” me!) In LWOLAP, Raymond did an okay job. Not great, not bad, and not much excitement goes on around him. I’m just not interested in his series, like I used to. I don’t know if it’s his fault or is it TVB’s fault for having cast him in such poor storylines, but I do find him having the same curse as Charmaine: Yummy Yummy and LWOLAP. *Hint to TVB: if you guys want better ratings and make more money, don’t cast them together for anymore series. Failed in both modern and ancient!* Will he improve? I would hope so, since I’m a fan of his, but it all depends on HK audience to support him and decide. Kevin Cheng, in my opinion, is not the greatest actor nor is he the cutest or youngest out of the bunch, but acceptable. I find his acting just average, not much difference from his other series I’ve seen in the past. But have to agree with the other Niki-Kevin fans out there; they’re just so cute on-screen! Without Niki and Bosco, supporting him in UTCOL, making him look great, I would have just skipped Kevin in this review! Bosco…Bosco…Bosco. Got 3 words for him: You the man! I’m beginning to like him more and more. Since he was in both LWOLAP and UTCOL, I guess it’s not his fault that the ratings are so good in one and not good in the other; mostly because his character is about the same: funny and innocent at the beginning, and got more serious towards the end. But just look at his performance lately! Besides counting LWOLAP, all his others series are in top ratings! War of In-Laws, Life Made Simple, Under the Canopy of Love, etc. Every series is different, every character is different, and every cast is different, but he’s still does an amazing job. I know, I know, you’re probably thinking that other actor/actresses are affecting the ratings, too, besides Bosco, but I’m talking about Bosco right now, so needed something to back my theories, making him look good! (excuse this one time please! Thanks! =D)

Overall, here is what I think HK audience likes:

They like comedy. (Who wouldn’t?!) They like drama. (Who wouldn’t?!) They like Bosco. (I’m assuming he’s a good reason for high ratings, but Who wouldn’t?!) They like something simple and enjoyable, that’s easy to understand without using any brain juice (UTCOL + simple storyline = high ratings; LWOLAP + complicated storyline = low ratings). I don’t know if my analysis is right or wrong, but it’s all my opinion. There maybe no curse on Charmaine or Raymond. And maybe I’m just over thinking everything I said earlier! I don’t know! But what I do know is that Lethal Weapons of Love and Passion, a much anticipated series, has been a flop, while an underrated, “underdog” Under the Canopy of Love has been a HUGE success. Life is forever full of wonders and surprises, and TVB ratings/series are no different. Here’s one more advice to TVB: keep it real, keep it simple, keep it fresh. That’s the key to “keep” us, fans, coming back.

lol a huge fault on my part...something that I completely forgot to do. For the past month or so I have been really busy with assignments due to the AP tests that are coming. So my updates have been not been frequent and very irregular. I stopped my "Its in the Eyes" feature.... sorry! It will be back next week and so will more frequent updates! Although it’s my idea, but I wanted it to be posted on RIta’s blog. Here goes….

I’m seeing doubles! Using TVB Generation’s idea of Double Feature, but instead of the comparison between 2 celebrities, this one is a little bit different: a double vision between a celebrity and a fan. Yes, a fan! Believable? No? lol…well, to me they look about the same. hehe…What do you think?

Don’t you think they look like Jessica and Tavia? I was shocked when I was scanning today’s news on TVB Chinese News, and just so happen to pass right by it. It may be just me. I don’t know. But that’s really pretty cool that fans could look like HK idols, too, and not just celeb-celeb look-alikes. =)

Just the other day, Louisa So (Ah So) meet with her fans at a gathering. Playing games with her fans, Louisa also provided over 30 presents to give out to her fans for supporting her all this time.

Louisa will soon be heading to Toronto for a promotional event, and in order for their idol to remain in her fittest form, the fans provided a variety of foods at the gathering for Ah So. Seeing that they even provided her favorite cheesecake, Louisa was very touched and happy. “Tonight we had lots of fun, and everyone had a great time. I’m really going to miss them. I hope that when I’m finish with all my work and not as busy anymore, I’ll be able to meet with them at another gathering real soon.”

Eileen Yeow has been very busy filming for 2 of TVB’s series, “Do Cheung Fung Wan” (賭場風雲) and “Welcome to the House” (高朋滿座). In “Do Cheung Fung Wan,” like Jessica Hsuan, she has to be an addictive gambler. Admitting that both herself and Jessica knowing nothing in gambling, and every time when they were getting ready to go on set, Eileen and Jessica kept on laughing at the dialogues they’ll have to say. “I don’t know what “bak ga lok” is! (some sort of gambling thing! I guess I don’t know gambling that well myself! Hehe…) “While filming, I constantly have to talk back against them and blow? and do other gambling moves, making me laugh!”

During filming, Jessica and Eileen are used to making mistakes, often not knowing what to do. “It’s because I don’t know what the card is or what to do, making it even more difficult for me to remember what I need to do next. The only way was for me to ask the guy actors around to help shout it out, so I can remember!”

Although she plays an addictive gambler in the series, Eileen in real life doesn’t like to gamble. “In a series, I can be a very persuasive gambler, but I always think that gambling is too risky. I’m afraid I’m going to give myself a heart attack! Most of the time, I can just play for fun in a couple rounds of Mahjong with my friends and I’m satisfy.”
